Glossary of Terms

AutoResponders
Sends an automated email response to each incoming message that is sent to a specific address. Each email address on your account can have a different autoresponder. An example: John sends email to sales @ tmt.co.za. The autoresponder for this email address sends an pre written message back to John automatically.

An auto responder is a pre-configured text message that can be sent to any party that sends an email message to you. This could be useful for registration, purchasing, or other information.

Access Logs
TMT Computers gives you detailed graphical and tabular usage statistics for your web site grouped by weeks, days, and hours. Using this information, you can track how many hits you are getting, where those hits are coming from, which page is the most popular, how much data transfer is occurring, and more. Access to raw log files allows you to analyze the usage using even more sophisticated programs.

Applet
An applet is a small executable module, that normally doesn't have the complete features and user interface of a normal application. Java is the language most commonly associated with applets. An applet is like a small piece of executable code that needs a full application to contain it. The applet runs inside of the application in a "sand box" or "virtual machine," which is a set of computer resources and instructions that make up an environment for the applet's execution.

ASP (Active Server Pages)
Microsoft NT scripting language which allows YOU to design web pages that can make displaying, manipulating and editing databases quick and easy.

CGI
Common Gateway Interface. CGIs are scripts written to allow live interaction and data from a web page.

Domain Name
A domain is an address on the internet. A domain name is usually in the form of www.domain.co.za for the world wide web and ftp.domain.co.za for FTP. Country-level domain names come in the form of "domain.co.za" (signifying South Africa), or "domain.co.uk" (signifying England).

Domain Name Registration
In order for visitors to find your web site using the domain name of your choice, you need to do two things. First, you need to reserve your domain name with InterNIC or UniForum SA, the organization that registers domain names. Second, you need to provide InterNIC / UniForum SA with the nameserver of your domain name, so that the IP address for your domain name can be disseminated throughout the Internet. TMT Computers can help with both steps. If you order any of our web hosting plans, we will handle the above process free of charge. If you are not yet ready to have a web site but want to reserve just the name, we can handle this procedure for you also. Domain names are going fast. Go to our domain registration page to register yours!

Disk Space
Everything related to your web site is stored on disk: your regular html files, images, multimedia files, anonymous ftp files, POP mail messages, cgi-scripts and so on.

DNS
Domain Name System The set of conventions for naming host computers on the Internet and the directory service for looking up names. Each host name corresponds to an IP address.

Email Aliasing - see email forwarding

Email Forwarding
Email Forwarding will take mail sent to a certain address (yourname@yourdomain.com) and forward it to your local ISP. For example, webmaster@yourcompany.com would forward mail (transparently) to anotheraddy@aol.com.

FTP Access
Used to upload and download your web site between your own computer and the TMT Computers Web servers. You have unlimited FTP access to your account 24 hours a day 365 days a year, allowing you to set up, change, or maintain your web site at any time.

Java
Java is a powerful programming language developed by Sun Microsystems. Java can be used to create powerful internet applications, called applets.

Password Protected FTP
Password Protected FTP is a type of FTP that requires a username and password to logon.

Perl
PERL is a popular programming language for creating cgi scripts on the internet.

PGP
Pretty Good Privacy. PGP is a form of encryption for secure transactions available for the internet using the system of private and public keys.

POP Email
Post Office Protocol Email. This type of email is actually physically located and stored on the server. You can use your favorite email program to download and view your mail.

Server Side Includes (SSI)
Server Side Includes are commands used in many internet scripts that perform simple commands.

SMTP
(Simple Mail Transport Protocol) -- The main protocol used to send electronic mail on the Internet. SMTP consists of a set of rules for how a program sending mail and a program receiving mail should interact.

SSL
(Secure Sockets Layer) -- A protocol designed by Netscape Communications to enable encrypted, authenticated communications across the Internet.

SSL is used mostly (but not exclusively) in communications between web browsers and web servers. URL's that begin with "https" indicate that an SSL connection will be used.

SSL provides 3 important things: Privacy, Authentication, and Message Integrity.

In an SSL connection each side of the connection must have a Security Certificate, which each side's software sends to the other. Each side then encrypts what it sends using information from both its own and the other side's Certificate, ensuring that only the intended recipient can de-crypt it, and that the other side can be sure the data came from the place it claims to have come from, and that the message has not been tampered with.

UPS
Uninterruptible Power Supply.
